Ron Witbeck: The beacon lights the way to safety

Our lives can be compared to the vessels that travel on the waters of this world. A lighthouse can serve as a reference point for those passing ships and boats, keeping them away from the hazards hidden beneath the surface. These lighthouse beacons and fog horns have saved many from being torn apart while on their voyages. They also serve as a guide when stormy weather fronts approach, sometimes bringing with it a blinding fog, so along with that beacon we will hear the blast of a fog horn. Those traveling upon the waters have to decide if they will trust in these signals, warning them of the unseen dangers.

Within life there are so many things hidden just below the surface of reality. If we lose focus of God’s plan for us, it’s like traveling on uncharted waters. We can be like a ship that is torn apart by those reefs just beyond our vision.

You may ask, “What are some of those hidden dangers?”

Let’s look to the Book of James in Chapter 3:13-18; comparing God’s Word to our beacon!

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” (NKJV)

Are we possibly losing sight of that beacon and drifting into the hazardous waters which are being so gently put before us, deceiving us with the same methods Satan has used for centuries attempting to pull us and others off course?

Today, if we find ourselves on a course that has no bearing on the beacon God provides in His attempts to keep us on course, we will surely be torn apart, sometimes sinking into the depths of hell. Then as those waters begin rushing in all around us we can suddenly feel as if we are sinking even deeper with no life boats or life preservers available. With no hope left, where do we turn?

Before giving up and abandoning ship, we only need to remember God knew we would sometimes steer off course. He has provided a way back for us — His unfailing love provided for us through Jesus.

By submitting to Him, He’ll calm the waters guiding us back to that beacon of hope and security.

Looking to the Book of Luke Chapter 4:18-19; we’ll begin to see those flood waters receding.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, (Jesus) for he has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the downtrodden will be freed from their oppressors, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” (NLT)

Several times when the disciples found themselves being tossed by the waters in their boat, and in storms fearing for their lives, losing all hope of survival, there was Jesus. He was their beacon of hope. Then He would often ask them, “Where is your faith?”

If you find your life in a sinking situation, comparing it to a boat on the sea taking in water, then focus on Jesus. He alone will give you peace, calming the seas of life. He will redirect your course, as He said to those in His earthly walk, “Follow Me.”
