Ferris hockey players earn academic honors

BIG RAPIDS — Several members of the Ferris State University men’s ice hockey team have received all-conference recognition as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) today unveiled its 2017-18 all-league honorees.

Junior defenseman Ryker Killins (WaWa, Ontario) was one of seven selections on the All-WCHA Third Team as one of the league’s top performers at his position this campaign.

Along with the all-conference selections, the WCHA also announced its 2017-18 Scholar-Athletes and All-Academic Team picks. The Bulldogs again ranked among the league leaders in both categories in total number of recipients honored for success in the classroom.

Overall, the Bulldogs had 20 players earned WCHA All-Academic Team recognition with at least a 3.00 overall grade points average for the previous two semesters. A total of 12 individuals were recognized previously as WCHA Scholar-Athletes by compiling at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA with at least a year of residency at the institution.

Also on the all-academic team, were: Tyler Andrew, Cameron Clarke. Andrew Dorantes,Tyler Dorantes, Jason Fernsler Jacob Hetz, Ryker Killins, Nate Kallen, Dominic Lutz,  Andrew Mayer. Corey Mackin. Mitch Maloney; Craig Pefley; Trevor Recktenwald, Joe Rutkowski, Darren Smith, Zach Szanjer. Jason Tackett. Zac Tierney and Zach Yoder.
