LEROY — Pine River’s girls basketball team didn’t have the season it was hoping for and lost to Lakeview in the district semifinal round.

But it was still a competitive season for the Bucks and junior Logan Powell.

“Our team was on a roller coaster,” Powell said after the regular season. “One day we’ll come in really good, and the next day we’ll come in not ready to play basketball. We all do it together. We play as a team.”

There were some high moments for the team.

“I think our win over McBain was a high turning point,” Powell said. “Our first game against Lake City, we didn’t win but we played our hearts out.”

Another highlight was an early-season win over Morley Stanwood, which won the district title.

Powell took more offensive responsibilities with standouts like Julie Justin having graduated from the previous season. Powell especially cherished shooting the 3-pointer.

“You have to concentrate your shot and don’t worry about how far you are from the line,” she said. “Just put it up.”

Powell reportedly sustained an injury in the district but the extent of it is not yet known. She’s slated to run track in the spring.
