City updates spring recreation programs

BIG RAPIDS — The City of Big Rapids’ spring recreation programs are underway.

With programs for all ages, the City of Big Rapids Parks and Recreation Department has updated its spring recreation programs and schedule.

Some programs require fees for participants, while others are free.

Senior Fit Time, instructed by DeMar Hatchew, who is certified in senior fitness, will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 26 at Style Station, 1619 Catherine St. The class is geared to help those in need of a low-impact routine with an emphasis on cardio, balance and muscle stretching. Participants are encouraged to bring a mat, water bottle and personal weights.

Classes, which are $2 each, will be from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursday.

For those who enjoy tapping their toes on the dance floor, a handful of line dancing classes continue through April 26 at Artworks’ dance studio, 106 N. Michigan Ave. Taught by Diane Jones, the choreographed line dancing classes are aimed to increase participants’ heart rates for a cardio workout.

All line dancing classes are $2 each.

Morning line dancing classes for beginners will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Intermediate classes will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

A special chair line dancing class aimed at helping participants with their range of motion and keeping active will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesdays at The Brook Retirement Community, 13897 215th Ave.

Pickleball players can hit the court from 5 to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays through March 28 at the Ferris Racquet and Fitness Center, 14342 Northland Drive. Players of any level are welcome to attend the program coordinated by Gary Lenon. Paddles will be available for use. Participants are required to wear tennis shoes at the facility and pay $5.

Water aerobics will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday through April 30 at the Ferris State University Student Recreation Centre pool, 401 South St. Sherry Williams will lead the low-impact exercise class offered for adults. Classes will begin in the shallow area of the pool and progress to the deep end to allow for a full-body workout. Cost is $4 per class or $40 for a punch card (12 classes).

As an ancient form of exercise originally developed in China as a martial art, certified international instructor Mary Loesch will lead participants in a Tai Chi class from noon to 1 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, through May 9 at The Old Jail, 220 S. Stewart St. Participants will benefit from improved muscle tone, flexibility, balance and coordination. The class is $2 per participant.

Residents who enjoy walking to stay active but want to escape the weather can do so from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, through April 26 in the hallways of Big Rapids Middle School, 500 N. Warren Ave. A map of the school with distances marked on it is available. There is no cost. There will be no walking March 26 to March 29.

Instructor Janitza Sawyer will present a Zumba Gold class from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays at the Big Rapids Middle School cafeteria. The class runs until May 31. Zumba Gold is designed for older adults or those starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle, who are looking for a modified Zumba class that creates the original moves at a low intensity. The class, which costs $2 per participant, is designed to introduce easy-to-follow Zumba choreography focusing on balance, range of motion and coordination.

After school tennis will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning on April 3. The Big Rapids Community Tennis Association and Ferris’ Professional Tennis Management Program and Club Tennis are offering the free program to students in fifth through eighth grades at the tennis courts at Hemlock Park. Tennis racquets will be available for use.

DeMar Hatchew will instruct Delay the Disease: Fitness for Pakrinson’s from 1 to 2 p.m. on Thursdays at Style Station. The class runs through April 26. Cost is $2 per class. Participants will learn ways to incorporate a variety of chair exercises, stretching, balance work, strength training and vocal and facial exercises. Caregivers also can participate.
