Mecosta County road officials lifting seasonal weight restrictions

MECOSTA COUNTY — Seasonal weight restrictions in Mecosta County will be lifted next week.

Mecosta County Road Commission officials announced seasonal weight and speed restrictions will be lifted on all county roads at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18.

According to the County Road Association of Michigan, road agencies throughout the state can institute weight and speed restrictions in late winter to protect paved roads as the frost comes out of the ground. As frost melts beneath a paved road, the roadbed turns wet and spongy because water is trapped between the pavement and remaining ice layer beneath. If large trucks and heavy equipment travel over a road that isn’t well supported, permanent cracks can occur.
