BIG RAPIDS — The Big Rapids girls tennis team picked up a 5-3 win over Grant on Thursday at home.
“The top of our singles and doubles lineups remain undefeated, each with a 2-1 win,” head coach Larry Langell said. “Our doubles lineup played well with the first three flights getting wins.”

No. 1 singles player Eden Short (6-2, 6-1), No. 2 singles player Zofia Freiberg (6-3, 6-4), No. 2 doubles duo Olivia Sanders-Katherine Langell (6-2, 6-1), No. 2 doubles duo Jessica Norton-Brook Mathewson (6-3, 6-3), and No. 3 doubles duo Chloe Mathewson-Christina Hatfield (7-6 (3), 6-1) picked up match wins. Freiberg pulled out her win after being behind in both sets.

“Both players were very disciplined in windy conditions,” Langell said. “Zofia was able to win some back and forth games at the end of each set to seal the win.”

The Cardinals were down two varsity players for Thursday’s match and had to call up two players from junior varsity.

“I am very happy with the team’s performance considering we were missing two of our varsity players for this match,” Langell said.  “Both No. 4 flights lost with a JV player filling in. Our other loss was at No. 3 singles with our No. 4 singles player moving up one position for the day.

Like many other sports this season, the weather has been a factor for the tennis team with two matches getting canceled.

“It took a considerable amount of work over the past two days to make our courts playable,”Langell said. “We were lucky to get all of the snow and ice cleared just a few hours before the match.”

The team will participate in the Whitehall Invitational this weekend.
