Community celebrates Month of the Young Child

BIG RAPIDS — Parents, grandparents and community members flocked to Michigan Avenue on Thursday afternoon to watch children be the center of attention in Big Rapids. Hundreds of youngsters marched, skipped and danced down the street during the Mecosta County Children’s Parade.

Wearing handmade hats and carrying homemade streamers and noisemakers, children enjoyed being in the sunshine and waving to the crowd as they paraded from the movie theater to Big Rapids Middle School. The parade, which included students and staff from Brookside Elementary, Crossroads Charter Academy, Eastwood Early Childhood Center, DeVries Daycare, Riverview Elementary, St. Mary Catholic School, St. Peter’s Lutheran School and more, was in celebration of Month of the Young Child.

The Month of the Young Child celebration continues with the 12th annual Mecosta County Community and Family Expo, set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. Games, giveaways, entertainment and the annual mascot dance-off highlight the event.
