Mathison earns Eagle Scout rank

BIG RAPIDS — Connor W. Mathison, of Big Rapids, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank available in Boy Scouts.

Mathison, the son of Mark and Grace Mathison, is a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 114 of Big Rapids and is a junior at Cranbrook Schools High School. He will graduate in May 2019.

For his Eagle project, Mathison constructed “Common Ground,” a gated enclosed ash garden at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Big Rapids. Common Ground was completed in August of 2016 and blessed on June 11, 2017.

Mathison was awarded his rank during a court of honor on Saturday, May 5.

He began his scouting career with Cub Scout Pack No. 3944 in Beijing, China, where he completed all five years of Cub Scouts. He received the Arrow of Light Award, the highest honor in Cub Scouts, and crossed over to Beijing Boy Scout Troop No. 943, where he served as assistant patrol leader, patrol leader and patrol grubmaster.

He then transferred to Big Rapids Troop No. 114, where he served as den chief for his little brother’s den in Cub Scout Pack No. 3114 as well as assistant patrol leader and patrol leader. He was part of the Mackinac Island Honor Guard in 2013, underwent his Order of the Arrow Ordeal in 2015 and earned 28 merit badges. With Troop No. 114, he attended four summer camps and helped host 15 Scouts from China during summer camp in 2016.

In Beijing, he played baseball, soccer and football, as well as six years of ice hockey on the Sunshine Zero, Imperial Guard and Fire Dragon hockey teams. In 2010, he was the Rookie of the Year on the Imperial Guard team. While at the Western Academy of Beijing, he was on the swim team for three years, the handball team for a year and the basketball team for a year. He also played piano and took Tae Kwan Do and art classes, as well as being on the after-school chess club.

In Big Rapids, he played with the Big Rapids Area Hockey Association Ice Dogs for a year and the Grand Rapids Griffins Travel A and AA Elite hockey teams for two years. He was on the Big Rapids High School varsity hockey team for a year, scoring the winning goal in the regionals in 2017 and being named Rookie of the Year.

Mathison also was a referee for Big Rapids Area Youth Soccer in the spring of 2017. He enjoys swimming class training at Ferris State University, playing piano and chess club. After his high school graduation, he plans to attend college to study mechanical or aerospace engineering, business and Mandarin Chinese.
