Big Rapids soccer team 3-1 at Freeland

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids’ girls soccer team came away with a 3-1 record in the Freeland Invitational on Saturday.

The Cardinals started out with a 2-0 win over Sault Ste. Marie and beat North Branch by the same score. Next was a 1-0 blanking over Swartz Creek.

Kaitlyn Ray and Selena Wright scored goals against Sault Ste. Marie. Leah Alley assisted on both goals.

Against North Branch, Ray and Wright had goals. Ariana Costie had an assist. Costie also assisted on Wright’s goal against Swartz Creek.

Freeland, the defending Division 3 state runner-up, faced Big Rapids and handed the Cards a 4-0 setback.

“It was a good day of soccer for us,” Big Rapids coach Curt Ray said.

Each game lasted 45 minutes.

“It was good to get over there and play some big schools,” Ray said. “We played solid. It was good to play different teams.”

Big Rapids is 13-2 overall. The Cardinals have a half-game lead over Tri County in the Central State Activities Association for first place. Both teams have one loss while the Vikings also have a tie.

Big Rapids plays at Fremont on Monday and Chippewa Hills at home on Thursday in CSAA games.
