Evart roars to Cat Classic baseball title

Evart catcher Billy Conklin tags the Merrill runner for the final out.

EVART — It was relatively easy for Evart baseball coach Josh Johnson to explain his team’s two 10-0 wins over Cadillac and Merrill on Saturday to take first place at their home Cat Classic.

“We did everything right today,” Johnson said. “We always talk about pitching, playing good defense, and today we had timely hitting. I hope we save a few of those hits for next week.

Against Cadillac, the Wildcats scored two runs in the first, three in the third and five in the fifth.

Wil Weinberg went all four innings, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out three. Jericho Vanscoyoc, Josh Dorn, Justin O’Dell and Danny Witbeck had two hits apiece Billy Conklin had three hits. Ty Sochocki had one hit

“The pitching was outstanding, today,” Johnson said. “Wil Weinberg was outstanding.

“In the morning it was a little cold, so I was a little nervous about my grip on the baseball,” Weinberg said. “Once we actually started to play, the sun came out and warmed it up a little bit which made it a good pitching day for me. Then I could relax a little bit and throw the ball the way I know how to.”

O’Dell was the winning pitcher in the second game, going five innings and allowing no runs on one walk and striking out five. He allowed four hits.

Conklin, O’Dell and Witbeck had two hits apiece. Garrett Johnson, Dorn and Sochocki had one hit apiece. Evart scored five runs in the second one in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth.

“We played great today,” Garrett Johnson said. “We had outstanding defense and pitching. Our hitting was great as well.”

The Wildcats are 9-6.

“Our record doesn’t show it, but 9-6 is good for the teams we faced, including some state-ranked teams,” Garrett Johnson said. “We’ve been playing very well. We haven’t lost by three or more runs this season.”

Evart is home on Tuesday against Marion.
