EPS board members approve summer school teachers, coaches

EVART — Only a few more weeks remain in the 2017-18 academic year at Evart Public Schools, but the EPS Board of Education is preparing for summer and next fall.

During the board’s regular meeting on Monday, officials approved multiple recommendations for summer school and fall coaches. Those approved include Val Hopkins, Pam McClelland, Kris Morgan, Joni Hebert and George Sims, summer school teachers; Aaron Wetters, summer lunch reading program; Carol Reedy and Jamie Buckner, elementary summer school educational assistants; Lorissa Helmling, high school credit recovery summer school teacher; and Charles Laitinen, lunch wagon position.

In looking forward to the fall, board members approved coaching recommendations. Approved coaches include Kelli Elder, seventh-grade volleyball; Jennifer Walters, eighth-grade volleyball; Amanda Brown, junior varsity volleyball; Katie Nostrant, varsity volleyball; Jesse Lang and Dan Duey, middle school football; Pat Craven, varsity football head coach; and Jason O’Dell, Ken Ranjel, Mike Petrongelli and Ben Bryant, varsity football assistants, based on numbers.

Also in preparing for the fall, board members approved the 2018-19 school calendar. The first day for students is set for Aug. 23, and will be an early release day.

In other business, board members:

• extended Superintendent Shirley Howard’s contract one year,

• approved the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District 2018-19 general fund budget, and

• approved the retirement of Bruce Brackett, high school custodian.

The next EPS Board of Education meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. June 11, at the boardroom, located at 321 N. Hemlock St., Evart.
