LEROY — Anselma Barnett discovered as a sophomore in Pine River she really enjoyed track.

She has enjoyed it so much, Barnett last week signed a letter of intent to attend Olivet College. She’ll be on the cross country and track teams.

At Pine River, Barnett has focused on the distance races. She had a season record of 2:42.5 in the Falcon Invitational. She has a season record of 5:55.54 in the 1,600-meter at a Highland Conference meet on May 8. She won a 3,200-meter race in a league meet in 13:33.82.

She has also run in the 4×800 relay.

Barnett still has some regional records from her junior season. She clocked the 1,600 meters in 5:42.6 and the 3,200 meters in 12:35.39.

Barnett started running cross country as a sophomore. Her PR was a 21:02.7.

She said she contacted Olivet via her cousin Raden Holmes, who graduated from Pine River and is attending Olivet.

“I decided on this at the end of basketball season,” Barnett said. “I’ve been thinking about college sports since my freshman year. I didn’t start track until my sophomore year. I really fell in love with it.”
