Carlson CSC trial begins

BIG RAPIDS — The trial of Daniel Carlson, 34, of Farmington Hills, began Thursday with opening statements and the first witness’s testimony.

Carlson is charged with one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, which stems from an accusation he assaulted an incapacitated woman in October 2016 at a Halloween party at Tullymore Golf Resort. Carlson is an attorney and also manages and partially owns Tullymore.

After two days of jury selection, Mecosta County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Amy Clapp delivered her opening statement and called the victim’s husband to testify. The witness related the events of the evening of Oct. 29, 2016, and the following morning.

The trial is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, May 22, in 49th Circuit Court. Judge Kimberly Booher described the court proceedings on Thursday as “a very, very slow process” when addressing attorneys regarding when she will hear motions relating to the case.
