Future 4-H’ers demonstrate their showmanship skills in the arena

Calves and kids were the center of attention on Thursday as they circled the ring during the baby calf show at the Mecosta County Agricultural Free Fair. Families gathered around the show arena to snap pictures of the children playing tug-of-war with their animals or helped out in the ring by keeping the calves moving. Along one side of the arena, Quinn Bourdlais stops to talk with her family and pose for pictures before continuing. (Pioneer photos/Meghan Gunther-Haas)

Matt Currie (middle) and Jack Currie pause for pictures and chat about the calf. During the show, the kiddos were asked their name and their cow’s name, then were given a participation ribbon, which could be presented at the dairy booth for a free ice cream.
