BIG RAPIDS — Courtney Brewer is settling into her role of being a key player in her junior season for Ferris State’s volleyball team.

Brewer played a key role in her team’s 3-1 win over Hillsdale in the final match of the Ferris State Invitational which, ended on Saturday with the Bulldogs finishing the tournament at 4-0.

Brewer had 11 kills and four blocks in the final game.

“We worked hard to put the ball away,” Brewer said after the match. “They had a lot of great digs. We just ran our offense.”

The Bulldogs went 4-0 to open the season and vaulted to No. 4 in the ratings. One of the wins was over No. 10 ranked Concordia St. Paul (Minn.)

“We take it one game at a time no matter our opponent,” Brewer said. “We just scout our team and go from there.”

Brewer is a junior outside hitter from Mona Shores.

“Four wins is a pretty good start, she said. “It worked out in our favor. I’m focused on whatever the team needs me to do. I think my strength is being quick in my swings.”

As a sophomore last season, Brewer played in 112 total sets and 32 matches for Ferris, which won its fourth consecutive GLIAC Championship Regular Season and Tournament Championship and third consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. Brewer had 292 kills and 182 digs on the season, and had a season best of 18 kills against Lewis University in the NCAA Regional Semi-Final game. She’s an all-stater from Mona Shores.

“I am so thankful I decided to come to Ferris,” Brewer said. “Not only has it made me a very good volleyball player but I feel I’ve been a better person along the way. I’ve met friends that will last me a lifetime.”

Ferris is playing in Lakeland and Tampa Bay this weekend.

“We take it a game at a time and take every game seriously,” Brewer said. “In Florida, we’ll face a lot of top-ranked teams. We love playing good teams.”
