BIG RAPIDS — Ferris State University junior All-American Allyson Cappel (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) has added to her list of accomplishments following an impressive season-opening week of action as she was chosen today as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II National Player of the Week.

Cappel was previously rewarded Monday by being named this week’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week.

Cappel got off to a big start in 2018 as she led the then 21st-ranked Bulldogs to a perfect 4-0 mark in the squad’s season-opening home invitational Thursday thru Saturday (Aug. 23-25). She tallied 4.64 kills and 3.86 digs per set while hitting .244 for the weekend as the Bulldogs beat two nationally-ranked teams along with two others receiving votes in the AVCA preseason poll.

The Bulldogs’ Cappel compiled 65 kills, 54 digs, seven blocks and two aces in wins over Upper Iowa, #17 Winona State, #1 Concordia-St. Paul and Hillsdale. The junior standout netted 22 kills and 23 digs in a key regional win over Hillsdale to wrap up the event and also had a team-high 12 kills and 10 digs while hitting an impressive .303 in Friday night’s impressive 3-0 sweep over defending national-champion and preseason top-ranked Concordia-St. Paul.

Overall, she averaged 5.1 points per set on the weekend and was named to the Ferris State Invitational All-Tournament Team. Cappel led all tournament players with her 4.64 kills per set on the weekend.

FSU ventures to the University of Tampa Classic on Saturday, Sept. 1, and will square off against Rollins (Fla.) at 10:30 a.m. (ET) along with host Tampa starting at 7 p.m. (ET).
