Big Rapids wins home opener in 61-14 drubbing of Fremont

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids made the most of its first home game by downing the Fremont Packers 61-14 on Friday night.

The 47-point win was Big Rapids’ largest margin of victory in a game since a 56-0 win over White Cloud in 2012.

Jace Gray got the party started with a punt return touchdown to put the Cardinals up 6-0. After getting the ball back on offense, quarterback Jayden Mason found Gray on a 42-yard touchdown pass. A two-point conversion gave Big Rapids a 14-0 lead.

Logan Youngs and Mason would score on runs of 11 and 59 yards, respectively to give the Cardinals a 28-6 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, a 19-yard Mason touchdown run, a 17-yard touchdown pass from Mason to Martin, and a 19-yard touchdown run by Aaron Blackwell gave Big Rapids a 48-6 halftime lead and a running clock. The rout was on.

An 80-yard Youngs interception return touchdown and a four-yard Martin touchdown run in the second half rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals.

Fremont had the edge in rushing yards (233-182) but Big Rapids’ out-gained Fremont 135-3 through the air. While both teams finished with 13 first downs, Big Rapids did its damage with big plays. The Cardinals averaged 11.3 yards per play, while the Packers averaged 4.4.

The Packers had no answer for the Cardinals’ veer schemes. Mason completed 4 of 5 passes for 135 yards and two touchdown passes and carried the ball four times for 83 yards and two touchdown runs.  Martin had six carries for 47 yards and one touchdown and caught one pass for 17 yards and a score.

Aaron Blackwell had four carries for 31 yards and a touchdown and Logan Youngs finished with two carries for 11 yards and a touchdown. Jackob Martinson caught a 59-yard pass, Gray a 42-yard pass, and Brett Doxtater a 17-yard pass.

On defense, Trevin Rosenogle had seven tackles (two for loss) and a sack and Elliott Blair had four tackles including one for loss. Youngs had three tackles and an interception and Jacob Roach had two tackles and one interception.

Big Rapids (2-1, 1-1) is on the road at Newaygo next week.
