Ferris volleyball teams prevail

BIG RAPIDS — The nationally 13th ranked Ferris State University women’s volleyball squad swept the Purdue Northwest Pride in Saturday’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the Ewigleben Sports Complex as the Bulldogs stayed perfect in league action.

The Bulldogs topped the Pride by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-15 in the victory.

Ferris State totaled 43 kills on the day with a .298 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs also had 42 digs and six aces in the win.

Junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel and middle hitter Mekayla Carey had 11 kills each while sophomore Katie O’Connell totaled kills. Freshman middle hitter Samantha Hermann also had four kills with a .667 hitting percentage.

Junior setter Maeve Grimes had 32 assists, four kills and an ace in the victory.

Purdue Northwest was led by Auburn Dodd with seven kills and Jenna Pasko with 11 digs in the second-ever series’ matchup.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 7-3 on the year and 2-0 in the GLIAC.

Ferris State plays on Tuesday at Northwood for a 7 p.m. league match in Midland.

On Saturday, Ferris swept the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers in their GLIAC opener on Friday inside the Ewigleben Sports Complex.

The four-time defending GLIAC Champions beat the Rangers 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 in the first-ever conference tilt between the two schools. Cappel totaled 12 kills on the night while Carey was close behind with nine kills for the Bulldogs. O’Connell also had seven kills in the victory.

The Bulldogs utilized nearly their entire lineup and the trio of freshmen outside hitter Danielle Thompson, middle hitter Samantha Hermann and sophomore Morgan Ross each notched three kills apiece in the balanced effort.

Junior setter Maeve Grimes had 32 assists, nine digs and two aces while sophomore setter Julia Mitchell totaled three assists on the night.

Bulldog senior libero Katie Placek totaled 22 digs to lead FSU in that category.

The Rangers were paced by Katie Adams with nine kills and Elizabeth Mavis with seven in the setback.
