Reed City teams take second

Reed City’s Taylor Harrison passes Big Rapids Kate Langworthy.

BIG RAPIDS — Reed City’s boys and girls track teams both took second-place trophies at the Ferris State Ray Helsing Invitational on Saturday.

The race was at Katke Golf Course.

Big Rapids won the boys with 28, followed by Reed City (55), Boyne City (58), Grand Rapids Union (96), Beaverton (139) and Fairview (151)

Brandon Wirth was first overall (17:30.6) while Calvin Rohde was fourth (18:18.2), Noah Blythe ninth (19:32.2), Jared Karns 20th (20:24.7), Ryan Simmons 28th (21:35.5) and Galvin Rohde 46th (26:12.60).

“We’re really proud of Brandon Wirth,” Reed City coach Rich Saladin said. “He took that third mile and made it his own. I’m real proud of what he did there. The boys as a he ran really well. We had fresh legs. It was windy conditions but it was a nice day for a fall run.”

“I thought it was a pretty good race,” Wirth said. “It was nice to be on a golf course terrain. We don’t get to run that a lot. It was more of a mental race for me than a physical one.

“We run lot more of two-track type of courses.”

“It was a good race,” Rohde said. “I felt pretty comfortable. It’s going really well. I think our team is getting along and bonding. We’re making a lot of improvement as a team and as individuals.”

For the Reed City girls, Abby Kiaunis was third (21:47.8), Taylor Harrison sixth (22:55.0), Paige Lofquist ninth (23:42.7), Abigaile Johnson 16th (25:13.2) and Leigha Johnson 18th (25:24.4).

“The girls, we had three top 10 finishes,” Saladin said. “Abby is ahead of last year’s pace so that’s a good thing.”
