Ferris State volleyball, football teams move up national rankings

BIG RAPIDS — The Ferris State University women’s volleyball squad has climbed two spots back to #11 in the nation in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Rankings after starting league action perfect over the weekend.

The Bulldogs, who are now 7-3 on the year, topped Wisconsin-Parkside and Purdue Northwest in identical 3-0 sweeps at home in Big Rapids on Friday and Saturday inside the Ewigleben Sports Arena in their first two league outings.

The four-time defending GLIAC Champions compiled 666 total points this week in moving up from #13 in last week’s poll. FSU had been as high as #4 in the nation following the first week of the campaign.

In this week’s poll, Nebraska-Kearney tops the charts with 1,165 points and 34 first-place mentions. Northern State is second with 1,104 points followed by defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul in third (1,089). Palm Beach Atlantic (974) and Lewis (966) round out the top five overall.

The second five consists of Minnesota Duluth (911), Southwest Minnesota State (885), Cal State San Bernardino (874), Central Missouri (784) and West Florida (712) in front of FSU.

The Bulldogs are the only GLIAC member school found in the top 25 this week, but both Northern Michigan (104) and Michigan Tech (14) are receiving votes.

Ferris State began a three-match road stretch on Tuesday (Sept. 11) evening with a 3-1 win over Northwood in Midland. FSU then ventures to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this weekend to face Northern Michigan on Friday (Sept. 14) and Michigan Tech on Saturday (Sept. 15).

FSU football moves up the rankings

After an impressive victory over a top 20 ranked opponent, the Ferris State University football squad has vaulted three spots to #6 in this week’s American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II National Rankings.

The Bulldogs tallied 658 total points this week in voting by coaches across the country to jump from number nine last week in the national rankings.

Along with the AFCA poll, FSU is also currently ranked third this week in the Massey Online Computer Rankings, the CompughterRatings.com poll along with the Hero Sports D2 listing. FSU was sixth last week in the D2Football.com media poll, which will come out again later this week.

Defending national champion Texas A&M Commerce tops this week’s AFCA Coaches Poll with 812 points and 26 first-place votes followed by Minnesota State, Indiana (Pa.), Northwest Missouri State and Grand Valley State in the top five overall.
