City commissioners to recap public meeting on railroad depot

BIG RAPIDS — After city officials announced the possibility of the city purchasing the old railroad depot on Maple Street, many members of the community offered suggestions for how to reinvent the old building.

During the Big Rapids City Commission meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, commissioners and city officials are expected to discuss the suggestions and comments regarding the depot offered by people during a public meeting on Sept. 6.

Among the topics to be recapped are what people thought were the positives and negatives of the city purchasing the depot and what possibilities people see for the depot in the future.

There also will be a work session regarding the Hanchett deed restriction following the general business portion of the meeting.

Also during the meeting, city commissioners are expected to consider approving:

• A bid for the sale of an “as is” 2001 Ford F-150 extended cab from Kevin Cushway for approximately $1,000;

• A resolution requesting the state legislature repeal the Fireworks Safety Act, 256 PA 2011, which legalized the sale and use of consumer fireworks, while restricting the authority of Michigan municipalities to regulate and ban the use of consumer fireworks;

• Mayoral appointments to boards and commissions; and

• A resolution electing the Michigan Municipal League Liability and Property Pool’s Board of Directors.
