United Way 2018 campaign set to kick off

BIG RAPIDS — Almost $900,000 was raised in the Mecosta-Osceola United Way’s 2016 and 2017 charitable giving campaigns to help benefit local families.

Officials with the group hope to raise $375,000 with this year’s campaign, which kicks off later this month.

From 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Sept. 28, the Mecosta-Osceola United Way will host its campaign kick-off breakfast buffet at the Big Rapids Holiday Inn, 1005 Perry Ave. The cost is $10 to attend.

Those who participate will not only receive a full breakfast, United Way Executive Director Betty Seelye said, but also promotional materials to hand out throughout the community in support of the organization.

The United Way’s funding benefits more than 20 service agencies in Mecosta and Osceola counties.

“This community is very generous in caring for themselves and each other,” Seelye said. “Our theme this year is, ‘United We Win,’ and that rings out in this community. We all unite, and put our efforts into helping people in our community who are more vulnerable than us.”

Other events taking place this year to support the United Way include:

  • At 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18, at the Holiday Inn, a community auction with 100-plus items will take place.
  • At 9:30 a.m. Oct. 27, at Big Rapids City Hall, the Skeleton Skurry 5K will benefit the United Way.
  • On Nov. 19-20, a cake and dessert on-air auction will take place on WWBR-FM (100.9).
