Liberty Hunt all set

BIG RAPIDS ‚— It’s a unique weekend for sportsmen on Saturday and Sunday with the Liberty Hunt. It focuses on youth, plus hunters with disabilities.

It’s also a big weekend at the Barryton Conservation Club, where president Dennis Cummings and other club members put on a special deer pole.

“Anybody that gets any kind of deer can bring it in and they’ll receive a ticket to be in a drawing at the end,” Cummings said. “Saturday, we’ll run it from about 9 to noon, and then roughly 3 p.m. to dark. That will be for both days.”

This will mark the third year of the youth hunt buck pole at the club.

“It’s been awesome,” Cummings said. “We’ve had lots of kids participate.”

Cummings is an avid deer hunter and predicts a strong season.

“There’s quite a few deer out there,” he said. “We’re also going to have drop box for the chronic wasting disease thing. The DNR will use us as a site for that.”

It’s also the same two-day period for early antlerless firearm.
