REED CITY — Reed City’s football team has reached the No. 3 spot for Division 5 teams in the latest Associated Press football poll.

But a key goal for the Coyotes now will be at home so Reed City can win the Central State Activities Association Gold Division title outright.

Two-way lineman Michael Johnson is among the many Coyotes playing a key role in the team’s success.

A senior, Johnson is in his third varsity year.

“The first two years, I learned quite a bit leading up to this year,” he said. “We had quite a lot of success last year. But this year we want to go all the way and win it all.”

Reed City, at 7-0, has clinched at least a tie for its record-breaking third straight title. The Coyotes have also clinched a playoff spot and are looking to get as many bonus points as possible for two or three home playoff games.

Johnson is a left tackle on offense and a left defensive tackle starting both ways.

“I feel I’m a strong offensive lineman and I can get to the second level very quickly. One on ones are very good,” he said, adding as a defensive lineman, “I feel I’m very quick.”

Years of varsity experience and offseason work has made a difference for Johnson.

“I feel we’re playing pretty good,” Johnson said. “We haven’t hit the level of where our potential is. We have a way to get to where we want to be.”

Being consistent and cutting down on mental mistakes remains critical, he added.
