BIG RAPIDS — The streets of downtown Big Rapids will soon be filled with kids in costumes, live music, candy and fun for all ages during the annual Fall Festival.

Taking place on Friday, Oct. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27, the festival will include events for both children and adults throughout the weekend.

Jennifer Heinzman, fall festival chair, explained the events scheduled for Friday evening focus more on the adults in the community.

“This gives the adults a chance to get out and play for Halloween without the kids,” she said.

From 5:30 to 7 p.m., there will be a chili cook-off in front of City Hall. Participants include, Blue Cow Cafe, Raven Brewing and Barbecue, Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital, Szots Bar and Grill, Crankers Brewery, Altercare of Big Rapids, Ferris State University Catering, Nawal’s Mediterranean Grille, Gourmet Cupcakes and Desserts, The Pie Hole, The Yellow Window, Three Girls Bakery and Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District.

Following the chili cook-off, The Balsam Brothers will be preforming from 7 to 9 p.m. Also during this time, those over 21 can purchase a wristband to participate in Boos and Booze, a bar crawl offering drink discounts at downtown bars.

Heinzman said people also are encouraged to participate in the costume contest at 8 p.m. as prizes will be available.

While Friday offers adults a variety of fun activities, Saturday’s lineup of events focuses on children and families.

At 9:30 a.m. those looking to get active can participate in the Skeleton Skurry 5K Run/Walk. All proceeds from this event will go to United Way.

As runners and walkers make their way toward the finish line, the children, parents and pet costume parade will take place at 10:30 a.m., giving families the opportunity to show off their Halloween looks.

Following the parade, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., people can enjoy trunk-or-treat on Michigan Avenue, games, prizes, a petting zoo and treats such as hot cocoa, cider and doughnuts.

During this time, there also will be the celebrity pumpkin roll at 11:30 a.m.

Big Rapids Downtown Business Association President Randy Ostrander said the event is fun for everyone.

“It brings a whole bunch of people into town who wouldn’t normally be here,” he said.

Several local businesses and organizations are supporting the Fall Festival, Heinzman said.

“There really is something for everyone packed into one weekend,” she said. “Anything that brings people downtown is another opportunity to highlight what we have here.”
