FSU soccer beats Davenport 4-1 in GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal

BIG RAPIDS — The Ferris State women’s soccer team opened GLIAC Tournament play with a bang.

The No. 14-ranked Bulldogs defeated Davenport 4-1 in GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal action on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will move on to face rival Grand Valley in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Allendale.

The Bulldogs improve to 15-2-2 on the season, breaking the program record for wins set by the 2015 team that finished with a 14-5-1 record.

The Panthers had no answer for the Bulldogs’ aggressive attack. Ferris had 27 shots compared to Davenport’s 15. Goalie Alison Chesterfield made four saves for Ferris State to improve her record to 8-1-0.

Freshman Lilly Campbell fired in her first career goal at the 31:50 mark to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 halftime lead. Ferris State didn’t waste any time getting started in the second half, with Carley Dubbert finding the back of the net for the eighth time this season on a Grace VerHage assist to go up 2-0.

VerHage wasn’t done as she notched her fourth goal of the season at the 67:01 mark to put the Bulldogs up 3-0 thanks to a Mackenzie Dawes assist. Ferris State’s fourth and final goal of the game was scored by Abigail Gilmore via penalty kick at the 75:46 mark.

Davenport’s Sabrina Stone scored the team’s lone goal at 86:12.
