BIG RAPIDS — The Ferris State women’s volleyball team emerges atop the GLIAC once again.

The No. 8-ranked Bulldogs clinched their fifth-straight GLIAC title in a 3-0 win over No. 24 Michigan Tech on Friday at home. The set scores were 25-21, 25-12, and 25-17.

“Tonight was such an exciting game,” head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhem said. “We knew we were going to have to play well. Michigan Tech was such a strong team offensively and defensively.  It was exciting for us to execute our game plan well enough to win the match.”

Junior hitter Allyson Cappel led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and 16 digs and sophomore Katie O’Connell had nine kills and 15 digs, while junior Maeve Grimes added 36 assists and seven digs. Junior Courtney Brewer had eight kills while seniors Katie Placek and Kayla Rosman tallied 20 and 17 digs, respectively.

Olivia Ghormley had nine kills to lead Michigan Tech and Grave Novotny added a team-high 18 digs.

“We had to slow down their weapons,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “Their outside and their right side are so strong. We had to really work to try and slow them down a bit.”

With the win, the Bulldogs earned the No. 1 seed in the GLIAC Tournament. They will finish their regular season with a Senior Day match against Northern Michigan tomorrow.

“Northern’s a good volleyball team,” Brandel-Wilhelm said. “We know tomorrow will be another tough night. Northern always plays well when they play the Bulldogs. They have a couple outsides, a middle, and a right side that are real strong offensive players.

“That’s going to be our focus tomorrow.
