BIG RAPIDS — Tough challenges are coming up in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for Ferris State including a weekend home series against Michigan Tech.

The Bulldogs will be looking for several players who have been contributing to the scoring attack recently to do so again including sophomore Liam MacDougall, who notched his third goal of the season in Saturday’s nonleague win over Michigan State.

Ferris is 4-4 overall and 2-0 in the WCHA.

“Nate Kallen made a great play forcing a turnover and getting the puck,” MacDougall said about his key goal vs. MSU. “He was coming along the right side. We had an odd man rush, and I put it in.”

He’s been happy with his offense.

“I’ve been trying to keep things simple,” MacDougall said. “I’m shooting the puck when I can. My teammates are doing a good job finding me.”

MacDougall suited up for 23 games for the Bulldogs in 2017-18, finished with a pair of goals and four assists for six points. He played for Bill Bowler of the Lasalle Vipers in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) from 2014-2017 and led the team in scoring for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.

MacDougall was Lasalle’s regular season and playoff Most Valuable Player in 2015-16, and won the GOJHL Most Valuable Player Award for the 2016-17 season. He finished with 29 goals and 40 assists in 49 games for Lasalle for the 2016-17 season, and added 10 points in the postseason.

“I need to work on consistency,” he said. “Sometimes, I might take a shift off. It’s a matter of keeping that intensity.”

He’s one of three born and trained Canadians on the Ferris roster.

MacDougall is majoring in business at Ferris.

“I was talking to a few schools before coming here,” he said. “I was talking to (assistant coach) Drew Famulak and even before being recruited, I came to a couple of camps here. The atmosphere, I could tell this was kind of a hockey town. I’m loving it so far.”
