BIG RAPIDS — It’s hard to believe, but the winter sports season is upon us.

Four area girls basketball teams — Big Rapids, Morley Stanwood, Pine River, and Crossroads Charter Academy — were gearing up for the season by participating in a scrimmage hosted by Big Rapids on Tuesday.

Alma and Mason County Central also participated. Each scrimmage was twenty minutes long, with each team playing five games, total.

“It’s definitely nice to shake the rust off,” Big Rapids head coach Jessica Haist said. “We’ve got a lot of new faces so it’s nice to get them some experience. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we’re getting there.”

“We started our first game and we could see the nerves from the most experienced player to the least experienced,” Morley Stanwood coach Rob Brauher said. “You have it every year. I’ve seen a lot of growth and the players are running the plays. This has been a good scrimmage for us.”

Scrimmages are a great way for teams to see live action and to work on their base offensive and defensive sets.

“Practice is good, but the girls never go as hard against each other as an opponent does,” Brauher said. “It was good to see the intensity today.”

Morley Stanwood plans on participating in a 50-team mega scrimmage Friday at the MVP Sportsplex in Grand Rapids. Larger schools such as Wayland, Livonia Churchill, and Muskegon Mona Shores will be among the participants.

“Today’s scrimmage was a nice warm-up for us,” Brauher said. “We get a chance to shake the rust off here because we only have practice tomorrow before going down there on Friday.

“I’m very encouraged by what I’ve seen today. We have a lot of work to do, but we’ll get there.”

Big Rapids will host Manistee for its season-opener at 7 p.m. on Dec. 4 and Morley Stanwood will play against Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 4 at Sacred Heart High. CCA will host Mesick at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6 and Pine River hosts Beal City at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 12.
