BIG RAPIDS — Santa Claus will visit Ferris State University this weekend as part of an annual musical tradition at Williams Auditorium.

Beginning at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, families are invited to the free event, Symphonic Santa Sunday, featuring the Ferris State University Symphony Band, West Central Concert Band and West Central Chamber Orchestra.

“This concert is one of our longest-standing traditions as far as holiday concerts,” said co-director Scott Cohen, noting the family-friendly performance offers a little something for everyone.

Also leading the ensembles will be co-director Dale Skornia.

Families in attendance will hear holiday tunes from Christmas music to Hanukkah songs, and the afternoon event will include an audience sing-along and visits from Santa, Dynamite the Clown and Bee Bee clown. There also will be sweets for the youngsters.

Running alongside the concert will be 11th annual holiday charity drive, which will support Project Starburst this year. Project Starburst serves Mecosta and Osceola counties, providing food and other related items, as well as supplemental services when resources are available, for families in need.

On Sunday, voluntary donations of canned and other non-perishable foods and paper supplies will be accepted in the Williams Auditorium lobby.

“Come early for a good parking spot,” Cohen advised. “This is a fun way to kick off the holiday season.”

Anyone with a disability who needs special accommodations to attend this program must contact (231) 591-3676 or williams_auditorium@ferris.edu at least 72 hours in advance of the event.
