City commissioners approve temporary Lions Club beer tent for fundraiser

BIG RAPIDS — Members of the Lions Club and the Mecosta County Convention and Visitors Bureau may be able to enjoy a beer tent at their “Blues, Brews and BBQ” event in July 2019.

During the Big Rapids City Commission meeting Monday evening, board members approved a request from the Lions Club to set up a beer tent in Hemlock Park during the fundraiser event next year.

In order to serve alcohol at the event, the Lions Club still must obtain and receive approval for a Michigan Liquor Control Commission temporary liquor license.

Also during the meeting, commissioners approved:

• A request for an extension of the Raven Brewing and Barbecue patio for the Big Rapids Alumni Reunion;

• Proposals from SmithGroup for planning services for the Hanchett site and old railroad depot on Maple Street;

• A $288,000 bid from The Isabella Corporation for the North State Street Lift Station improvements;

• A bid for wastewater treatment plant system improvement from Northwest Kent Mechanical Co. for $80,880;

• An increase in employer contribution for full-time employee health care;

• Mayoral appointments of Lynn Anderson, Paula Priebe and Rory Ruddick to the West Michigan Regional Planning Commission for the 2019 calendar year; and

• An ordinance approving and adopting the 2018 codification of Big Rapids City Code of Ordinances.
