BIG RAPIDS — The defending national champs were in a four-game losing streak and obviously needed a win on Thursday.

They got it.

D’angelo Hughes and Greg Williams scored 19 points apiece in a 97-78 Bulldog Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory over Northwood at Wink Arena.

Ferris 6-5 overall, is now 1-2 in the league. Northwood falls to 4-3 and 2-1.

We’ve got a lot of new faces that are blending in,” Ferris coach Andy Bronkema said. “It was good to be back home at Wink Arena against a good Northwood team. Their coaching staff is doing a great job.”

“We’ve been focusing on milestones,” Williams said “Coach Bronkema said the first milestone was to focus on a GLIAC win. We did it. It feels good after that four-game skid.”

The Bulldogs were 10-of-15 in 3-pointers in the first half to open a 63-37 halftime lead.

Williams had a huge first half with four 3-pointers. He hit two straight for a 19-7 lead. Later in the half, he scored off the glass for a 39-22 lead. Markese Mayfield fed Williams with a dribble pass later for a 49-33 lead.

Then it was Hughes’ turn. The Ferris point guard scored off a drive and moments later had a 3-pointer for a 60-37 lead.

Williams was 4-of-6, Hughes 3-of-4 and Cole Walker 2-of-2 in 3-point attempts in the first half. Those three players, combined with Mayfield, scored in double figures in the first half for 51 total points.

Hughes hit a 3-pointer late in the half for a 63-37 lead at the intermission.

“That’s how we practice and that’s how we play together,” Williams said. “When we share the ball, we have a lot of guys who can hit the three. We sometimes have four to five shooter on the floor.”

Williams had a 3-pointer at 15:37 of the second half for a 70-47 lead. David Jelinek’s slam dunk for Northwood cut the lead to 71-53 with 12:10 to play. Northwood’s Trevor Davis netted a 3-pointer moments later. Hughes scored on a six-point Ferris run for a 77-56 lead. Northwood went on a surge and Ja’Kavien Lewis’ 3-point play cut the Ferris lead at 2:55 to 89-77. Williams drove inside for a 93-78 lead at 1:30.

Cole Walker added 17 points and six boards and Mayfield had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Ferris. Lewis led Northwood with 23 points.

The Bulldogs were only 6-of-17 from the free-throw line. Former Big Rapids standout Demetri Martin had three points and three rebounds in 12 minutes of action.

“It was obviously a bad loss but a learning point for our team,” Martin said. “We’re 2-1 in the conference. We beat a couple of good teams.”

Ferris is home on Saturday against Saginaw Valley in GLIAC action.
