Sunny with a chance of family fun

MECOSTA COUNTY — Summer is a time for swimming, weddings, camping and reunions, and the Mecosta County School Section Lake Veteran’s Park can accommodate it all.

Offering 162 campsites and five cabins, all campsites have electrical hook-ups and water outlets. Because of this, and many other amenities offered here, School Section Lake Veteran’s Park Manager Tammy Fitzgerald is enjoying a busy summer.

“Since the weather broke, when the cold and the rain went away, we have been busy,” Fitzgerald said. “I think we’re busier than what we were last year and the year before.”

Fitzgerald noticed this year brought new seasonal campers, people who rent a campsite for the entire season, as well as new people who were interested in purchasing day passes. Fitzgerald said, while the seasonal passes are an option, they are sold out until next year; however, day, monthly, weekend and weekly camping is always an option.

Fitzgerald notes many people purchase day passes to access their personal beach and swimming area, as well as their store.

“I’ve always loved this beach,” Fitzgerald said. “I think we have a really nice beach area. It’s very family-friendly.”

To stay family-conscious, School Section does things like rope off their lake to signal where the shallow, safer end is for younger kids. They also offer many activities to do throughout the week, providing opportunities to have fun while meeting other campers and building life-long relationships.

“I’m a camper, and I love this campground because it’s very family-oriented, and, to be honest with you, I’ve been camping here for 25 years. All of my kids learned to ride their bikes in the field over there,” Fitzgerald said, pointing at a nearby driveway.

As well as a lake, School Section hosts entertaining activities for the kids such as Frisbee golf, volleyball, soccer and even some creative projects.

“We have an art barn for the kids, and that can be used by campers as well as locals or anybody that’s here visiting our park,” Fitzgerald said. “That is where we plan kids activities or art projects. They do nature hikes. They do art projects and organized sports games.”

While School Section crew is helping families have a good time, it also is the perfect place to celebrate new families being made or coming together, said Fitzgerald, referencing the family group camping opportunities School Section offers.

The family group camp is nestled in a secluded area of School Section and can house up to 72 people.

The camp is six cabins, each seating 12 people, and comes with a main lodge, fireplace, private beach area and other amenities. Because of this, Fitzgerald said they book a lot of weddings, receptions and family reunions during the summer.

“It’s a perfect venue for something like that, plus you get it for the whole weekend,” Fitzgerald said.

The family group camp is $225 per night, with a three-night minimum for reservations.

With various opportunities and amenities, Fitzgerald encourages community members to come out for a visit.

“We have plenty of sites available for those that are not seasonal, and then we also have the cabin rentals,” Fitzgerald said.

“It’s a fun campground,” she said.
