BALDWIN — Baldwin native Josh Kutchinski has been named the new head men’s basketball coach at Jackson College.

“I am the very first Baldwin graduate to be a college basketball head coach,” Kutchinski said. “This is a great honor. I am truly blessed.”

Last year, Kutchinski entered his eighth season at Arizona’s Mesa Community College in different stints. He was appointed associate head men’s basketball coach. He was previously an assistant coach at Lake Superior State men’s basketball in 2016-17.

Kutchinski spent seven seasons, in three separate stints, as the assistant men’s basketball coach at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Ariz., and helped lead the team to two NJCAA Region I championships.

From 2009-12 Kutchinski also served as Assistant Athletic Director for Student Success at MCC where he helped guide student-athletes in developing their academic and career plans.

During his high school playing days in Baldwin, Kutchinski won three consecutive district titles with Baldwin High School, and later joined the staff as an assistant in 1997. He later coached Holton High School’s varsity program and went 51-20 in a three-year span. The team also won the school’s first district title in 46 years during the 2007 season and posted the best record since 1941 after going 17-7.

Jackson is a community college which had an 11-17 men’s basketball record last year and was 8-10 in the Western Conference of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association.

Kutchinski said he wants to work with his players in getting involved with the community and bringing awareness to everyone about the basketball program.

“We are excited to have Josh on board as our head men’s basketball coach and he came with a lot of reference in the basketball community,” Rick Smith, assistant athletic director at Jackson College, said. “His excitement, experience, and blue collar work ethic will rub on to his players as he builds his program at Jackson College. He is just what we were looking for in a coach.

“Josh will be well received in the MCCAA conference. His basketball program will work hard as they build the program that is a privilege to be part of at the JUCO level. We are glad to have him in the Jet family and his hard work will fit in well with the other coaches on staff.”
