New Crossroads football coach takes over

Crossroads football players go though drills on Tuesday.

BIG RAPIDS — Crossroads Charter Academy football coach Rusty Fullerton is among the new skippers this fall and has two practices under his belt with the CCA 8-player team.

Fullerton was an assistant last year. He replaces Thomas Wheeler, who resigned to take a teaching position in Reed City.

“Right now I have 16 kids, 13 eligible at this point,” Fullerton said. “We needed 12, so we’re doing good.”

The Cougars have been going at it three hours a day. Practices started on Monday.

“The first day we focused on defense, Tuesday was offense,” Fullerton said. “We’re going to alternate them. Wednesday will be defense and Thursday offense again. Friday we’ll do both, with full contact.”

Crossroads has a scrimmage at Genesee on Aug. 23. The first game is on Aug. 29 at Burr Oak.

“We’ve got some returning experience,” Fullerton said. “As far as seniors go, we have five. I expect them to lead by example.”

“This team is looking good,” senior Hunter Walsh said. “I’m happy with the numbers and we’re looking to improve.”
