Men arraigned in Lake County for attempted murder

LAKE COUNTY — Two men were arraigned in the Lake County Trial Court Wednesday for allegedly attempting to murder Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Cody Christopher Haner

Cody Christopher Haner, 35, of White Cloud, and Randy Lee Smith, 34, of Cadillac, were each arraigned on two counts of assault with intent to murder, as well as counts of accessory after the fact to a felony, possession of firearms by a felon, possession of ammunition of a felon, fourth-degree fleeing a police officer and felony firearm.

Haner was arraigned as a habitual offender, second offense, and Smith was arraigned as a habitual offender, fourth offense.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the charges stemmed from an incident which occurred on July 19.

At 4:32 a.m., Deputy James Buscaino performed a traffic stop for moving violations on a 2005 Buick Terraza minivan in the area of State Road and 64th Street in Chase Township.

The vehicle reportedly did not pull over and fled at a high speed away from the officers.

Buscaino, along with Deputy Timothy Keena, pursued the vehicle. During the pursuit, the deputies reported multiple gun shots being fired from the vehicle toward them.

The deputies said they did not fire back at the vehicle, and after several miles, they lost sight of the vehicle and the pursuit ended.
