Big Rapids soccer team opens this weekend

BIG RAPIDS —Boys soccer practices start two days earlier this season, and it also means a quicker start for Big Rapids coach Justin Fox and his Cardinals.

The Cardinals have been busy getting ready for the season which starts at Muskegon Oakridge in a tournament on Saturday. Big Rapids has its home opener on Monday with Cadillac and also plays Whitehall on Tuesday on the road.’This means three dates in four days.

“We normally have the first Saturday where we can get a scrimmage in,” Fox said. “But the state changed the start date and how our districts work. Instead of going Wednesday a half week and a full week and then starting games, we’re going a whole week and then starting. I’m going to treat it a little bit like a scrimmage. We’re at Oakridge and open with Manistee.

“We’ll see how it goes. I’ve got a bunch of younger guys who will play with us too. We’ve got a few guys who haven’t played before. We have a few seniors who came out the first time.”

There’s about 17 players on the varsity and 13 on JV.

“Those numbers are a little on the low end but we’ve had worse,” Fox said. “We’re learning how to play together with one another. It’s a simple game, keeping possessions and learning where everyone is going to go.

“We’ll probably start slow and get better.”

“We have a lot of grinders,” senior striker Jonah Hengesbach said. “That will make ourselves better.”
