Evart quarterback enjoys impressive start

Evart’s Danny Witbeck has emerged as among the area’s top quarterbacks.

EVART — Evart’s football team is off to a 2-0 start and among the reasons has been the play of junior first-year quarterback Danny Witbeck.

Witbeck has filled in nicely for the graduated Carter Pritchard, and has led the Wildcats to wins over Frankfort (20-3) and Pine River (13-9) the first two weeks of the season.

“Danny’s a tremendous athlete,” Evart coach Pat Craven said. “If you watch hm play baseball, you know that. He’s a really smart kid and a tremendous athlete. We’re looking for Danny to continue to improve every week.

In the win over Pine River, Witbeck passed for 125 yards and rushed for 71 yards.

“Danny is a tremendous competitor with great knowledge of the game,” Craven said. “He has the ability to run and throw the football, which makes him a dangerous weapon for our squad.”

“I thought we played very well,” Witbeck said after the Frankfort game. “We had to get better with a couple of mistakes we made. It was a fun first game for me.”

Witbeck considers his arm strength and mobility to be key assets. He wants to improve on reading defenses earlier in the play “and not having to make adjustments later in the game.”

Evart is home on Friday with Manton.

“We have high prospects and we have a good team,” said Witbeck, who also plays defensive back. “We have to stick to what we know and our roles on defense.”Each game, “we have to come out strong and be aggressive” he said.
