Langworthy eyes trip to state finals

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids sophomore Kate Langworthy has had only two races so far this season but appears ready to make it a good one.

“Kate Langworthy is a young firecracker for our team,” Big Rapids coach Giselle Tauriainen said. “She put it a lot of miles this summer and is a hard worker for us. She is hoping to punch her own ticket to the state meet this year.”

Langworthy has had two races so far this season. She was fifth last month at Hesperia. On Saturday, she was third in the Ray Helsing Bulldog Invitational at Ferris with a 21:09.1.

“This (Katke) course is a lot easier for sure,” Langworthy said after Saturday’s meet. “It was still a really good race.”

Her freshman season was a good one for Langworthy. Her personal record came at the regional with a 19:57.79 in the regional.

“My freshman race went pretty good,” she said. “I’m going to try to break 19. It will take a lot of hard work and dedication.”

The extensive amount of summer running she and the team did helps plenty, Langworthy indicated.

“I just want to keep improving throughout the season,” she said.

Her sister, Megan and Maddie Hammer graduated from last year’s team.

Langworthy also runs track.

“I like cross better because of the distance and with the team aspect you feel closer because there’s not as many people,” she said.
