Reed City offensive lineman eyes improvement in his junior season

REED CITY — Jackson Miller made plenty of progress as a sophomore offensive lineman for the Reed City Coyotes.

Miller, a junior, and his teammates have been busy attending various summer football functions including the Coyote blocking camps. The most recent one was this past Monday.

He started last season as a sophomore for the Coyotes, who were Central State Activities Association Gold Division champs for the fifth straight season. Miller moved up to the varsity prior to the start of the season.

“It wasn’t that easy to start out, but it got better as the season went on,” Miller, a rightside guard, said. “It was a matter of trusting my teammates.”

Miller had played on the junior varsity as a freshman. But he quickly saw what a challenge he would have to the varsity level. The adjustment was easier for him as the season progressed.

“I just had to get faster,” Jackson said, adding that he’s a “little” bigger from last season. “I want to be a lot better.”

Miller is the only returning offensive lineman. That factor is likely to put more leadership responsibility on him, Miller acknowledged.

At the blocking camps, “there’s certain steps you have to do before every play,” he said.

It’s been a busy football summer for Miller.

“I’ve been at everything so far, I’m at 100 percent,” he said. “It’s the lifting weights, tires, and all of that. This makes all the difference.”

Miller played basketball in the past but is planning on being on the track team next spring in the throws. He’s doing that as a way of staying in shape. He has observed other football players partaking in track to stay in physical shape.

Miller also plans on playing more defensive line this season at an interior spot.

Practices start on Aug. 8.

“I think we’ll be all right,” Miller said. “We’ll be a young team this year. Age is just a number.”
