Wrong-way fatal accident in Osceola County kills two

BURDELL TWP. — Two men are dead as a result of a wrong-way crash Thursday on U.S. 131 in Osceola County.

At 3:05 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers responded to a three-vehicle accident on the U.S. 131 near 20 Mile Road in Burdell Township.

The crash was a result of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on the highway, according to a news release from Michigan State Police.

The at-fault driver, a 43-year-old Paris man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of one of the other vehicles involved, a 62-year-old man from Highland Park, Ill., was transported by EMS to Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital. He was then flown by helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he died as a result of his injuries. The driver and passenger of the third vehicle were not harmed in the crash.

At the time of impact, all persons involved were wearing their seatbelts. Police do not yet know if drugs or alcohol are a factor. The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers at the scene were assisted by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Department, Osceola County EMS, LeRoy, Tustin, and Lincoln Township fire departments, Reed City Towing and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
