Basketball teams wrap up summer seasons

EVART — The boys basketball season is still a few weeks away but Evart’s Kris Morgan likes what his team accomplished during the summer months.

“Reed City kind of headquartered (a summer league),” Morgan said. “We played Reed City, Baldwin and (Big Rapids) Crossroads. This was every Monday and Wednesday night through June. Chippewa Hills was in it.

‘We went to the Ferris camp (in late June) and finished out at a Cadillac shootout. We were carrying approximately 8 to 12 kids with everything we had all summer. It was a pretty good turnout. These will be all varsity. I had eight seniors all summer long. I’ll be carrying a lot of seniors.”

This gives them, Morgan noted, a chance to refresh the players on plays and systems.

“We had a kid who didn’t play last year and a new kid who came to our school late last spring,” Morgan said. “This familiarizes them with our offense and what we’re all about. It was a good summer for that.”

Pine River’s boys team also had an active summer.

“So far we’ve competed in the Benzie summer shootout, team camp at Albion, and the Traverse City West Titan shoot-out,” Bucks coach Brian Goodenow said, adding his team would also be competing at a Cadillac shootout.

“We’ve played some extremely tough competition this summer,” he said. “We’re a very young group with no starters returning, and only three players with varsity experience, but we’ve made good progress as we learn our roles and adjusted to the speed and physicality of varsity basketball.”

Reed City coach JJ Eads has had a busy summer with his varsity team. It will be Eads’ second season of coaching. But he got the job in October last year and has had a chance for his first summer with the Coyotes.
