Coyote soccer team working without Phelps

EED CITY — It hasn’t been easy for the Reed City boys soccer team to try compensating for the loss of injured senior Seth Phelps.

It was that way again on Wednesday in an 8-0 loss to Newaygo in Central State Activities Association action. The Lions had all eight of their goals within the first 31 minutes of the first half. The game ended at halftime from the mercy rule.

Phelps has been nursing a sore knee and continues to watch the game from the sidelines.

Newaygo has established itself as a CSAA power at 4-0 in the league and 7-1 overall. Angel Guevara had four goals while Franciso Rios, Michell Karrip, Adrian Briones and Chase Pendock had one apiece. Noah Painter had two assists while Briones and Alexander Ceja-Alvarez had one apiece.

“This is a real young group that’s active,” Newaygo coach Jason Long said. “They love playing soccer. They’re pretty easy to coach. You put them in the right direction, they have fun and play hard.”

Reed City’s most recent game had been a 9-1 loss on Aug. 30 at Kent City.

Reed City coach Doug Emington said Phelps has a pending MRI.

“He’s on a brace right now,” Emington said. “He had two different reports sent to the athletic director and we haven’t read the second one yet. It hasn’t come through. It might say he’s unrestricted. He plans on kicking in football games. In this game, with the way the game was, I didn’t think it was worth risking him.”

Phelps also didn’t play against Kent City.

“He’s a central player for us and I really don’t have a backup for him,” Emington said. “I thought we played as well as we could without him. Going forward, we’re going to have to groom someone else to play that spot. It’s a center midfield position.”

Emington said his players continue to play with enthusiasm.

A game at home with Mason County Central for Thursday was canceled because MCC has dropped its program. The Coyotes played home on Monday against Tri County and were scheduled to be at Fremont on Wednesday and at home on Monday against Lakeview.

Seth Phelps is out of the Reed City lineup because of injury.
