Reed City cross country team first at McBain

REED CITY — The Reed City cross country program took first in both the boys and girls races and brought home the trophy in the McBain Co-ed Invite on Thursday.

Reed City girls placed five in the top six runners including overall winner Abbi Kiaunis and runner-up Taylor Harrison, who had a personal record. In fourth place was Olivia Thompson, fifth place was Abigaile Johnson with a PR and sixth place was Mackenzie Vandawater.

Leigha Johnson was in 13th place, and Faith Woods in 17th with a PR.

Brandon Wirth was the boys overall winner with a time of 17:22, while Calvin Rohde finished in second (18:15). Noah Blythe was ninth overall (20:04). Ryan Simmons and Jared Karns both passed runners at the finish line to squeeze out an extra point for the Coyotes. Reed City beat Farwell 57-59.

“It was exciting to see Reed City with the top two runners in both the girls and boys race,” coach Rich Saladin said. “Last year we didn’t have enough runners to qualify for a team score, and this year we won both. It feels great and is an awesome confidence builder. We had nine runners take home medals. They worked hard and they earned it.

“We won’t run in competition again until Friday at the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State. The kids are excited to get there, watch some collegiate races, and then see some other outstanding high school runners across all divisions. We’ll work hard in practice and be ready to compete.”
