Huffman doing the job for Pine River boys

Sasha Huffman (20)

LEROY —  When the boys basketball season started, Pine River coach Brian Goodenow predicted sophomore guard Sasha Huffman could compete for a starting spot.

Not only has Huffman won the spot he’s been scoring a lot of points for the Bucks, who are off to a 1-4 start.

“He scored 19 in his first game, and struggled a little bit in his second game, as the whole team did,” Goodenow said after Huffman netted 20 points in a 53-47 win over Manistee on Dec. 20. “He plays very intense basketball. He’s very good defensively as well.”

Huffman played for the Pine River JV over the summer.

“I got invited to go (with the varsity) to the Albion camp,” he said. “I played pretty well there. The season started (and he joined the varsity). I just decided I’d go out there and play as hard as I can and try my hardest. It’s going pretty good.”

In the win over Manistee, “defensively we kind of struggled, but we were involved fairly well on offense and that was the key,” Huffman said. “It didn’t take long for Huffman to feel comfortable with the varsity level from the JV.

“The biggest difference is the speed,” he said. “Everybody is going way faster than JV. I’ve worked on my shot a lot. (On 3-pointers) you have to follow through and you have to have confidence.”

Huffman said he’s struggled on his ballhandling and has been working on that aspect of his game.

Pine River plays McBain Northern Michigan Christian on the road on Thursday.

“We’re looking good,” Huffman said. “We’re very young, so we’re still developing. We’re pretty big. We need to work on helping out.”
