Lodholtz pitches one-hit gem for Evart

EVART — It was probably the best high school pitching performance for Evart junior Troy Lodholtz, who has special reason for savoring the one-hit shutout he hurled against Vestaburg on Friday.

The Wildcats won both six-inning games of the non-league doubleheader 7-0 and 7-2.

Lodholtz, who didn’t pitch last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, went all six innings, allowing one single and no walks and striking out two.

It’s his junior season.

The fastball, low and away, was especially working for Lodholtz.

It is his second varsity season.

“I was hitting the spots,” he said.

The curveball, is his second best pitch and was also working effectively. He said it was his best pitching performance of the season.

“But we let him go tonight,” Evart coach Josh Johnson said. “We want to see if he could go a complete game. He had 70 pitches today.”

“I felt pretty good,” Lodholtz said.

The Wildcats use him almost exclusively as a pitcher.

“I want to improve on my changeup and curveball,” he said.

“His freshman year, he was really one of our best pitchers, if not our best one,” Johnson said. “We were anxious to get him back, but cautious. It was nice to see him pitch well. I think he has more. His velocity isn’t quite where I think it could be.”

In the opener, Jericho VanScoyoc, Garrett Johnson and Ty Sochocki had singles. Van Scoyoc and Johnson added an RBI. Billy Conklin had a triple and two RBIs. Josh Dorn had a double and two RBIs.

Freshman Danny Witbeck was the winning pitcher of the second game, allowing two walks and six hits. He also had two singles and an RBI. Carter McLachlan had a single and RBI. VanScoyoc, Sochocki, Justin O’Dell and Dorn also had hits.

“That puts us over .500 (6-5),” Johnson said.

Evart is at Beal City on Friday.
