Brock Nelson off to fast start for Pine RIver football

LEROY — Brock Nelson wouldn’t mind an encore performance of sorts when Pine River goes for a 3-0 start on Friday at Evart.

He scored three rushing touchdowns and had 114 yards rushing against Kalkaska in the season-opening 22-0 win on Aug. 24.

“We came out and had a lot of butterflies, you could tell,” Nelson said.

“The only thing that killed us was ourselves. We had a lot of penalties and turnovers. All in all, we got the win. It was a great feeling and a great game.”

Nelson anticipates carrying the ball a lot for the Bucks this season.

“I feel I have good field vision,” he said. “I can see holes and have the ability to break tackles.”

Nelson is a junior but was also on the varsity last season, when the Bucks struggled through a 1-8 season.

“Last year we were young and no one was very confident,” he said. “We didn’t play like a team as we are this year. We’re prepared this year.”

Kalkaska had defeated Pine River twice, so getting the win was huge for the Bucks

“On defense, we looked awesome,” said Nelson, a linebacker said.

“We have to keep practices crisp and play well and play for each other.”

Pine River also beat Hesperia last week and will open the Highland Conference season at Evart on Friday.
