Evart loses Stokes to injury

Kyle Stokes

EVART — Evart is off to a 1-1 start and has not had one of its standout players, senior Kyle Stokes, available so far this season.

Stokes sustained an undisclosed injury in a preseason scrimmage and it’s not known when he might return. The Evart coaching staff did not provide further details.

It’s his second year on varsity. Last season, he was a slotback and also worked on punt and kickoff returns.

As a slotback, “I had a pretty good year with a lot of yards and carries,” Stokes said. “I can also catch the ball.”

Stokes takes pride in his ability to hit the hole and break tackles.

“I didn’t do as much summer work as other guys but did some,” he said

When he returns the lineup, Stokes hopes to present a threat on punt and kickoff returns. His longest return was 50 yards last season.

“You have to have speed and good blocking in front of you obviously,” Stokes said.

On defense, Stokes will be in the backfield.

“Our offensive line is pretty young,” Stokes said. “We lost a lot of seniors. Our backfield is about the same. The (line) has had experience from the JVs. I think they’ll do well the next couple of weeks.”

Evart is coming off a 4-5 season.

“We want to get 9-0,” Stokes said. “We can do it and climb the top of the mountain. We want to make the playoffs.”

e against Pine River on Friday.
