Pelton having strong season for Coyotes

Anthony Pelton

REED CITY — It didn’t take senior tight end and defensive lineman Anthony Pelton and his Reed City teammates long to establish the notion the Coyotes are going to be a contender again this season in the Central State Activities Association Gold Division.

Reed City scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter en route to a 34-13 win in the season opener (Aug. 23) over state power Montague.

On Thursday, Reed City dumped Fremont 44-6 to open the Central State Activities Association Gold Division season.

But the win over state power Montague has the Coyotes extremely confident.

Pelton said it was easy to explain the turnaround by his team from 2017 when it lost 48-14 to Montague.

“We prepared for them hard, all three weeks, starting from the first week of practice,” Pelton said. “At game time, we were ready to go. We were in shape. Coach ran us till we were prepared. Last year we were dehydrated and tired. By the end of the game, Montague was worn down and we played like it was quarter one. That turned out to be the key of the game.”

As a tight end, Pelton is focusing mainly on blocking.

“I can go catch a pass, I’m a dual threat,” he said. “Guys can run behind me. On defense, I’m there to make a wall, plug up gaps and make plays.”

It’s Pelton’s third varsity year.

“I think we improved a lot from last year, including my footwork, size and overall knowledge of the game and our offense, understanding everything,” he said.

The Coyotes are at home against Grant as they continue their bid for an eighth straight CSAA Gold title.

“We’re planning on going all the way this year,” Pelton said. “It was a huge statement game for us (vs. Montague). They were talking about winning the state and we came in and showed them what’s up. We’re definitely going to make a (long) run this year.”
