Pine River volleyball falls in tournament semifinals

LEROY — Pine River lost in the semifinals of its home invitational on Saturday.

In pool play, the Bucks beat Marion 25-10, 25-22; North Bay 25-19,25-15 and Glen Lake 25-15,25-17

Pine River lost to McBain in bracket play 25-21, 21-25, 15-8.

Emma Whitley had 42 digs and 25 kills; Parker Moores had 30 digs and 20 kills and Sophie Johnson had 50 assists and 19 digs.

“We played fairly consistent most of the day until semis,” Pine River coach Jana Dennis said.

“We definitely made improvements in areas we’ve been working on but, as always, found others places that need work. Every day is a step in the right direction and we get closer to being the team we strive to be.”

Pine River is 10-8-1 and was at Evart on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Pine River had its first home contest and gave the fans their money’s worth by winning in 5 sets 23-25,30-28,25-21,21-25,15-12

Whitley had 20 kills and 20 digs; Moores had 10 kills 13 digs; Cayla Trowbridge had 10 kills and 10 digs and Johnson had 35 assists and 10 digs

“We came into tonight knowing we wanted to win our first home game,” Dennis said.

“We did a great job communicating and worked real hard. This was an entire team effort to achieve this win. It was definitely a battle. We need to eliminate some unforced error but I’m real proud of ourselves for not playing a mental game.”
